Cobb County Civic Center

Cobb County Civic Center

Marietta, GA

Cobb's Board of Commissioners engaged CROFT to give a complete face-lift to its aging Cobb County Civic Center.  Since its construction in 1972, the Civic Center had been one of the premier venues for high school sports, graduations, craft fairs, art exhibits, gun shows, and Special Olympics activities in metro-Atlanta.  CROFT led the architectural, interior, and engineering design for a $5.7 million expansion and renovation that transformed the Civic Center into a sleek, modern, multi-functional space that will serve Cobb County for generations to come.

CROFT has been selected for several design projects for Cobb County. Our experience shows that their architectural designs are attractive, with nice finishes and attention to detail, while keeping within our established construction budgets. Their cost estimates have been quite accurate, yielding no major surprises when the sealed bids come in.

Wheeler High School Performing Arts & Athletic Center

Wheeler High School

Cobb County Schools
Marietta, GA 30060

CROFT provided full architectural and engineering design services for the addition of two new facilities at the densely developed Wheeler High School campus in East Cobb. The 35,000 SF West addition sited carefully to the rear of campus consists of a 750 seat performing arts center, pre-function space, and new classroom facilities. The 65,000 SF south addition includes a new 3,000 seat sports arena, classrooms, locker rooms, indoor running track, staff offices, viewing platforms, and pre-function area tied into existing core areas and staff parking area. The final portion included a new fieldhouse, stadium seating, outdoor lighting, concession stand, and track and tennis court resurfacing.

CROFT carefully developed a site master plan, A/E design, and multi-step construction phasing and laydown plan that allowed the integration of these two new facilities into an existing 2,300 student campus without disruption of classes or extracurricular functions. The new state-of-the-art venues integrate seamlessly into pre-established building elements and adjacencies on campus and are the new prototype for high school performing arts and athletic facilities throughout Cobb County.

ADDITIONS ON HIGHLY CONSTRAINED SITE

The $14 million West addition and $10 million south addition were master planned, designed, and built simultaneously with high community involvement in the master plan. CROFT’s master plan included a cost-benefit analysis to evaluate both material and constructibility options to maximize value and minimize the impact on the school during construction. While maintaining existing parking capacity, CROFT integrated new sports infrastructure into the project to reduce overall cost. As two story additions, both have been incorporated seamlessly into an existing split-level site plan and improve ADA access.
