Mead & Hunt (M&H) and CROFT & Associates (CROFT) partnered to provide full architectural and Engineering (AE) design services for the demolition, renovation, and historic preservation design services for multiple facilities at the 165th Airlift Wing at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, GA. The work was funded under SRM projects and delivered as Design-Bid-Build. The scope included the renovation of a 68,579 SF historic aircraft hangar (Building 1905) to modernize electrical, mechanical, and utility systems, refresh architectural finishes, and replace the 7,500 SF west admin/shop wing roof. The design addressed inadequate restrooms and showers, the decommissioning of the High Expansion Foam fire suppression system, and upgrades to meet current fire detection, suppression, and life safety codes. Two new 1,152 SF interior aircraft maintenance shops were designed within the hangar bay, along with modifications to the isochronal inspection dock to support C-130J-30 aircraft. The shops included hydraulic presses, tabletop power tools, and compressed air maintenance tools. In addition to shop areas, the hangar also housed avionics labs and a free-standing paint booth for aircraft components. The shops, labs, and paint booth required specialized MEP infrastructure including advance ventilation systems. An option was also included to replace the existing hangar bay slab floor. In addition with the hangar 1905 renovation, the project also included the demolition of an adjoined administrative facility, Building 1906. The demolition of this facility added complexity to the 1905 scope where the adjoined footprint was removed. The former building joint had to be patched with new brick to match the existing historic brick on that face of the 1905 hangar. Building 1905 is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). CROFT led the historic coordination effort between the Air National Guard and the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to ensure protection of the historic facility’s architectural features.
