Kennesaw, GA – A cherished piece of Acworth’s history is embarking on an exciting new chapter. The historic McCray Farmhouse, a pre-Civil War structure dating back to the mid-1800s, has been successfully relocated to a prominent new home at the entrance to Logan Farm Park, where it will soon be restored and transformed into Bizarre Coffee’s fourth location.
CROFT & Associates partnered with Macallan Construction and the City of Acworth on the remarkable effort to preserve and relocate the historic structure rather than see it lost to redevelopment. The farmhouse was carefully separated from later additions, placed on steel beams, and transported along Cherokee Street to its new location within Acworth’s growing Parkside District.
The project reflects the City’s commitment to honoring its past while creating vibrant destinations that enhance the community’s future.
“Projects like this are incredibly rare and rewarding,” said Danielle Leclercq, Project Architect for CROFT & Associates. “To have the opportunity to preserve a piece of Acworth’s history and help reposition it for future generations is something truly special. Watching the community gather to celebrate the move was a reminder that historic buildings are more than structures. They tell the story of a city. Being part of the team that helped save and relocate the McCray Farmhouse has been one of the most unique experiences of my career.”
Originally located at 4700 Allatoona Gateway, the McCray House was acquired by the City of Acworth during redevelopment efforts associated with a new hotel project. Recognizing the home’s historic significance, City leadership made the decision to preserve the structure rather than demolish it. The farmhouse’s new home at 4415 Cherokee Street places it alongside the Acworth Arts Alliance House and at the gateway to Logan Farm Park, creating a destination that blends history, culture, recreation, and community gathering spaces.
“The City of Acworth continues to demonstrate what thoughtful, forward-thinking community development looks like,” said Leclercq. “Their willingness to invest in preserving history while simultaneously creating new experiences for residents and visitors is truly innovative. The Parkside District is becoming a place where Acworth’s past and future coexist in meaningful ways.”
Once restoration is complete, the Downtown Development Authority will lease the building to Bizarre Coffee, a popular regional coffee brand known for its creative menu and community-focused atmosphere. The Acworth location will join the company’s existing stores in Roswell, Canton, and Woodstock and is expected to open later this summer.
The City of Acworth recently welcomed residents to witness the historic move, with hundreds gathering along Cherokee Street to watch the farmhouse travel its final 600 yards to its new home. The successful relocation was made possible through the collaboration of Macallan Construction, CROFT & Associates, the Acworth Police Department, Acworth Parks, Recreation and Community Resource Department, and Acworth Power, Public Works, and Stormwater teams.
The McCray Farmhouse will serve as a lasting example of how historic preservation can play a meaningful role in economic development, placemaking, and community identity.
